Description
This course will examine John Davenant’s most controversial treatise: De Morte Christi or On the Death of Christ, which offers perhaps the strongest and most nuanced Reformed alternative to a strict “limited atonement” understanding of Christ’s death and the application of its benefits. Through a careful read of this text along with an introduction to its historical and theological context, students will become intimately acquainted with early modern English hypothetical universalism and the breadth of the Reformed tradition on this crucial issue.
Taught by Dr. Michael J. Lynch, one of the world’s leading scholars of hypothetical universalism and an expert on the thought of John Davenant. Runs 9/30-12/13/19. Download the syllabus here. For more details, email Mike at lynch.j.mike@gmail.com.
Online only, runs 10 weeks, meeting 1 hr./wk. via videoconference. Students will also have the option to participate in a class discussion board. Register to reserve your spot and schedule will be set after a poll of participating students; if the class time does not fit your schedule, you will be eligible for a full refund.
