Intermediate Latin Courses

Intermediate Theological Latin Reading, Part II

A course guiding you through intermediate Latin readings in the Medieval and Reformation periods. Runs 1/11-3/20, 2021.

Description

This course will solidify your knowledge of Latin grammar, strengthening and broadening your vocabulary, particularly for reading theological texts, and improving your reading and translation skills. You will master the vocabulary from Richard Muller’s Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms, will review grammar with the aid of Randall Meissen’s Scholastic Latin, and will read and translate passages from the Vulgate, the Tremellius-Junius-Beza Latin Bible, and from a range of theologians throughout church history (including Augustine, Calvin, and Beza). The course takes places over the course of 10 weeks, with a weekly 1.5 hr. online class along with at home lectures describing the grammar; expect 6 – 8 hours of homework a week.

The course will run for the 2021 Hillary Term (January 11-March 20).
