This course offers an introduction to the nature and method of scholastic theology. The primary aim of the course is not only to equip students to read historic scholastic texts, but also to train them to apply the scholastic method in carrying on scholastic theology today. Through close readings of authors such as Lombard, Anselm, Aquinas, and Reformed scholastics, students will gain the conceptual tools and specialized vocabulary necessary to discuss scholastic theology. Class discussion will guide students through the process of using vital scholastic notions and terms to analyze primary texts. Through this process, students will learn the distinctive pedagogical, scientific, and systematic character of scholastic theology, as well as how the scholastic method should shape theology in the present.
