This course offers a comprehensive survey of the doctrine of divine power, centered on a close reading of Thomas Aquinas’s Disputed Questions on the Power of God (De Potentia Dei). Students will examine how Thomas understands “power” in divine causality and operations, ad intra and ad extra. In addition to exploring Thomas’ synthesis of early philosophical and theological traditions, the course will critically engage with opposing theories of divine power, including the voluntarism of late medieval thinkers.
