Description
This Spirituality/Elective course will be taught by Dr. Eric Parker. This course will run from January 11 through March 20. The syllabus is available here.
The writings of Lancelot Andrewes have been hailed by such disparate voices as William Laud, John Milton, and T.S. Eliot. Ordained in the 1580s, Andrewes was a contemporary of Richard Hooker, who would come to serve as court preacher to James I and one of the chief translators of the King James Version. Like the great defender of the Elizabethan Settlement, Andrewes has been called an “avant-garde” Conformist, whose anti-Puritan and high church theology inspired a “second Reformation” under Laud and the Caroline Divines. This class will focus on a selection of Andrewes’s sermons and lectures in an effort to discover what they reveal about the nature of Anglicanism past and present.
