This course will discuss the material content, ecclesial use, genealogy, and historical context and influence of Baptist confessions since the 17th century. The course will pay special attention to the material content of the Baptist confessions through the modern era. Particular emphasis will be given to the most widely used and influential confessions in Baptist life such as the First and Second London Confessions, the Orthodox Creed, the New Hampshire Confession, the Abstract of Principles, and the development of the Baptist Faith and Message. The Baptist confessions will be compared with one another alongside other non-Baptist confessions of faith that are likewise relevant for the development of Baptist doctrine such as the Westminster Confession of Faith and Savoy Declaration. The course will also consider the general ecclesial use and abuse of confessions in Baptist life, examining the rise and fall of confessionalism.

Description

This required Baptist Studies/Theology course will be taught by Jordan Steffaniak, and will run from January 8th through March 16th. The syllabus will be posted when available.

This course will discuss the material content, ecclesial use, genealogy, and historical context and influence of Baptist confessions since the 17th century. The course will pay special attention to the material content of the Baptist confessions through the modern era. Jordan Steffaniak (ThM, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) is President of The London Lyceum, Editor of Hanover Press, and Research Fellow at the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture. He is a Recognized Instructor of Theology for Union Theological College and an Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at Anderson University. He is a PhD Candidate in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham (UK). He has a forthcoming book entitled Mere Classical Theism set to release from Lexham Press and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals such as International Journal of Philosophy of Religion, TheoLogica, Journal of Reformed Theology, Philosophia Christi, and Evangelical Quaterly.

Online only, runs 10 weeks, meeting 2 hr./wk. via Zoom. Students will also have the option to participate in class discussion on the Davenant Common Room Discord server. Register to reserve your spot and schedule will be set after a poll of participating students; if the class time does not fit your schedule, you will be eligible for a full refund.

This is a graduate-level course. Although a BA is not a necessary pre-requisite for this course, students should come prepared to do graduate-level work.
